Innisfil man charged after cops find 'large quantity' of assorted drugs

RIDE stop leads to officers seizing suspected crack cocaine, crystal meth, heroin, marijuana and a drug believed to be a combination of fentanyl and carfentanil

INNISFIL - A 29-year-old Innisfil man is facing 12 charges after a RIDE stop resulted in a foot chase and the seizure of a large quantity of drugs.

On Friday, Dec. 7, 2018 around 9 p.m., South Simcoe Police Service officers were conducting a RIDE program on the 6th Line between County Road 4 and 10th Sideroad in Innisfil.

A vehicle entered the check point and an officer spoke to the lone occupant.

An odour of marijuana was detected and suspected cannabis was observed to be readily available in the vehicle.

As police attempted to place the male driver under arrest he resisted and ran off, leading officers on a foot chase. He was arrested 150 metres away and transported to South Division.

As a result of the RIDE stop, officers seized a large quantity of a variety of drugs including suspected crack cocaine, crystal meth, heroin, marijuana and a drug believed to be a combination of fentanyl and carfentanil.

A quantity of cash and drug paraphernalia were also seized.

The man was charged with a number of offences including two charges under the Criminal Code:
    •    proceeds of crime
    •    resist arrest

Six charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act:
    •    three charges possession for the purpose of trafficking
    •    three charges possession
    •    two charges under the new Cannabis Act (Federal)
    •    one charge under the Cannabis Act 2017 (Provincial)
    •    one charge for driving while under suspension

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing on Monday, Dec. 10, 2018.
