The three winners of the Simcoe County Historical Association’s 2021 Andrew Hunter Award for excellence in history essay writing will be appearing virtually on the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Lavanya Chopra of Bradford District High School and Jordan Walker and Lisette Hamilton, both of Innisdale Secondary School, will discuss their winning essays and the experience of learning more about challenging topics in Canadian history, from racism to colonialism.

The Andrew Hunter Award, named after one of the founders of the SCHA and an early historian of Simcoe County, was originally offered to history students at Laurentian University’s Barrie campus. The award was retooled last year to honour Grade 10 history students at schools across Simcoe County.

The students’ talk will begin at 7 p.m. It is open to SCHA members and the public. Those interested in joining the talk can email [email protected] to receive a link to the meeting.

The Simcoe County Historical Association is a voluntary non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and appreciation of the history and heritage of Simcoe County.
