NEWS RELEASE

BARRIE POLICE SERVICE

*************************
In recent months Barrie Police Service has investigated a number of serious and fatal pedestrian-related collisions.

The Barrie Police Service will be operating a pedestrian awareness campaign in an effort to bring awareness to all drivers and pedestrians that share the road.

This campaign will focus on the education through enforcement surrounding the responsibilities of pedestrians and drivers that share the roadway under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.

We all know that it is an offence to drive through a red light at an intersection, as it is there to monitor the flow of vehicular traffic safely.

It also comes with 3 demerit points which no one wants on their driving record.

So no one intentionally would drive through a red light.

But over and over we see pedestrians walk against “don’t walk” signals at an intersection, which is really no different than running a red light in a car.

In 2015 there were 52 pedestrian related collisions within the City of Barrie reported to police.

In an effort to reduce this number Police will be focusing on offences committed by pedestrians.

Below you will find a list of the most common offences committed by Pedestrians.

The Barrie Police Service Traffic Unit remains committed to road and pedestrian safety.
