The OPP confirm that a charge of impaired driving has been dropped against an Innisfil man who drove a snowmobile in a desperate bid to save a drowning friend.

51-year old Ross Guy was charged Feb. 6 after his friend Brent Fisher, age 48 of Innisfil, died in the icy waters of Georgian Bay near Victoria Harbour.

"I can confirm the charges have been dropped," said OPP Const. Sue Jessop. "After completing the investigation it was decided not to pursue the charges."

At the time of the tragedy, investigators said four men were travelling together on two snowmobiles after a day of ice fishing when one of the machines broke through the ice.

The operator of the second snowmobile — Fisher — died after he got off his machine to help, but also went through the ice.

The other three men made it safely back to shore.

Published reports said the other survivors hailed Guy as a hero who saved their lives and used the sled to go for help despite having a few drinks.

Reports said Guy was originally a passenger on Fisher's sled, who was sober.
