Smoking likely helped start a Barrie house fire Saturday afternoon that caused about $300,000 in damages.

“There’s a high probability of inadequately disposed smoking materials, on the back deck outside,” said Barrie Deputy Fire Chief Carrie Clark. “It’s accidental but preventable, nothing suspicious, but unfortunate.”

Barrie Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) personnel were called to 74 Patterson Rd., a single storey residence, at 2:14 p.m. Saturday.

“It (the fire) went up the siding at the back (of the house) and got into the soffits (beneath the overhang of the roof),” Clark said.

There were two living units within the home.

BFES said the home is now uninhabitable.
