Starting July 4 and running until July 10, community members from Barrie and surrounding areas will get active as part of Steps 4 SickKids, an event that fund-raises for liver transplant priorities at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).

The event was created in part by Ashley Logan, one of Steps 4 SickKids’ committee members who was the inspiration behind Ashley’s Angels, a charitable initiative that has raised over $1 million to help improve the lives of children with liver and other solid organ transplants.

When she was two years-old, Ashley received life saving liver transplant surgery at SickKids thanks to her Aunt Cheryl, who was her donor, and Dr. Vicky Ng, the physician in charge of her care. Following her operation Ashley’s parents, Jeff and Sherrie Logan, created Ashley’s Angels to raise funds in support of transplant research, education, and innovation at SickKids, as well as raise awareness for organ and tissue donation. Ashley, now a healthy 14 year-old, no longer requires lifelong immunosuppression medications following her liver transplant.

With the COVID-19 pandemic putting a hold on in-person community fundraising events, Ashley and five of her close friends created Steps 4 SickKids, a weeklong virtual event that encourages participants to walk, run or bike 25 kilometers in seven days in support of SickKids. Funds raised through Steps 4 SickKids will support Liver Transplant Priorities, such as a research study of a highly selected cohort of children who are no longer on immunosuppression medications. This study is being conducted by Dr. Vicky Ng of SickKids. This inaugural event has already raised more than $6,800 since May and is looking to meet their $10,000 goal by the end of their event (July 10, 2021).
