He’s from “the Rock” and he’ll have you rolling in the aisles with laughter – if you can get tickets for his show.

But Talk is Free Theatre chief Arkady Spivak estimates there are only a dozen or so tickets left for Friday’s standup show by Shaun Majumder at the Georgian Theatre, so patrons had better get a wiggle on.

Spivak also admits he may have broken one of his own rules in welcome the funnyman back to Barrie as soon as he did.

“I usually don’t bring anyone back in less than three years, and Shaun was last here just over two (years ago). So, evidently, you can’t keep people away from the man.”

Majumder, of mixed European-East Indian ancestry, cut his teeth in his native Newfoundland, joining in the ethnic taunts of his schoolmates before realizing he was the target. Shaun has, of course, gone on to bigger and better things since taking his act out of Canada’s youngest province and across the nation.

Shaun has been a regular at Just For Laughs festivals, also becoming a mainstay on TV shows like This Hour has 22 Minutes, and Republic of Doyle, besides gracing the big screen in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.

Spivak continues to sing his praises.

“Shaun is extremely gifted, but more than that – he has earned all of his comedy as a human (being). He’s a terrific actor (in that) he doesn’t speak his material, but acts it. (Shaun) is a funny man before his material is funny, and also a brilliantly smart man.”

Nor is it lost on Spivak or anyone else, but Majumder is raising money for what Shaun calls “social enterprise” back home in Newfoundland.

“(I’m) delighted that Shaun is using his great talent charitably.”

As to whether Shaun will use his barbs to score political points, Spivak insists the act goes broader.

“Comedy is always a seamless combination of long-time identifiable truths with what it current. Comedy is frequently more current and truthful than newspaper headlines, so, by all means, please expect some current nags.

“Shaun will expose anything that’s untruthful or absurd.”

He did ruffle a few feathers on 22 Minutes last year with a sketch suggesting white supremacists “embrace the beige”, and accept that all of us will look the same by the year 3000.

Shaun Majumder will get the laughter going, whatever the colour, at 8 p.m. Friday at Georgian Theatre. To learn more, click here.
