The Barrie Baycats (18-8) shutout out the Hamilton Cardinals (9-16) 6-0 on Saturday night to move into a first-place tie with the Kitchener Panthers.

It was the Baycats' second shutout of the season as Hamilton collected just three hits.

Jordan Castaldo opened the scoring in the first after singles by Ryan Spataro and Starlin Rodriguez, with an RBI single.

With runners still on the corners, Kevin Atkinson added another run for Barrie with a fielder's choice to cash in Rodriguez.

Castaldo's solo homer in the third and Tim Smith doubled home a run in the eighth to bring the score to 6-0.

Emilis Guerrero went the distance, striking out six with no walks and allowing only three hits.

Hamilton’s Arman Lakhani took the loss, going 5.2 innings with two strikeouts and three walks while giving up four earned runs.

The Baycats host the third-place London Majors (16-9) this afternoon at 2 p.m., at Coates Stadium in Midhurst.

Guelph breaks out the bats for 7-1 win

GUELPH - The Guelph Royals (9-18) beat the Brantford Red Sox (10-13) 7-1 Saturday night in Guelph.

The Royals got 14 hits on their way to the victory and splitting the weekend series.

Guelph scored first in the opening inning when Sean Reilly hit his ninth home run of the season off Red Sox starter Tanner Guindon.

The Royals scored runs in all but two innings, including a RBI doubles from Ethan Mohan, Josh Garton and Liam Hicks to bring the score to 5-0 before Brantford scored its only run of the game in the fifth inning after Sebastian Lech singled home Andris Rizquez who had reached on a walk and a stolen base.

Guelph added another run in the eighth on a wild pitch, scoring Mohan to make it 7-1.

Royals starter Yomar Concepcion put in eight innings of work, striking out 10 batters and walking five to earn the win. Brantford starter Tanner Guindon took the loss, going four innings and allowing four earned runs.

Herd hit parade trumps Panthers

BURLINGTON - It was an impressive day at the diamond for the Burlington Herd, picking up 14 hits in a dominant 11-4 win over the first place Kitchener Panthers on Saturday.

The Herd capitalized on early mistakes by Panthers starting pitcher Christian Hauck, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning as Hauck gave up five walks, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch in a shaky outing on the mound.

Canice Ejoh brought in two runs in the first frame on a two-run single, while Andrew Mercier and Nolan Pettipiece each drove in a run on singles as the Herd batted around in the first inning, with Justin Gideon coming to the plate twice.

The Herd did not let up in the second inning, adding five more runs on five hits which ended the afternoon for Hauck on the mound. Ejoh singled again in the second, while Tyler Patzalek and Reese O'Farrell had RBI singles.

Breaking things wide open was Nolan Pettipiece, who came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a bases clearing double to drive in three runs making the score 10-0.

Pettipiece was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI's. The Burlington native has been hot at dish as of late, collecting 10 hits over his last six games and driving in five runs in that span.

The Panthers got on the board in the top of the fourth inning as Brian Burton and Mike Gordner scored on a throwing error by Burlington's second baseman Grant Okawa to make it 10-2.

Kitchener added two more runs in the fifth as Zarley Cina and Yorbis Borroto scored on hits from Mike Glinka and Burton respectively to cut Burlington's lead to 10-4.

That would be as close as Kitchener would get as the Herd added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an RBI double by Patzalek.

Herd starter Casey Howard looked good on the mound in just his second start of the season, pitching eight innings while giving up eight hits and two walks to go along with three strikeouts to pick up the win, improving his record to 3-1 on the year.

Reliever Tyler Herr shut the door in the ninth inning, giving up one hit while striking out two batters. It marked the final appearance in a Herd uniform in 2018 for Herr, as he has signed with the San Rafael Pacifics of the Pacific Association.

Hauck took the loss against his former team to drop his record to 5-2 on the year. The Orangeville native struggled in this one, going just 1.2 innings while giving up ten earned runs, eight hits and five walks in addition to one strikeout.
