Grizzlies basketball regular season wraps up

The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s basketball teams played their final games of the regular season on Saturday afternoon when they travelled to face the Centennial Colts in Scarborough, Ont.

In the men’s game, the Grizzlies battled hard but were unable to hit a few needed clutch shots as they fell in a tight game 73-65 to the Colts.

Anthony Meggo (Whitby) had a team-high 18 points in the game while teammate Daniel Martyn (Barrie) was 5-for-7 shooting and scored 13 points.

The Grizzlies wrap up the regular season with a 9-11 record and currently sit in sixth place in the OCAA east division standings with a few other league games remaining on the schedule.

Georgian College plays host to the 2019 belairdirect OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship from Feb. 28 to Mar. 2 at the Georgian Athletic Centre in Barrie.

The Grizzlies earn a bye and will open the tournament on Thursday, Feb. 28 when they host a to be determined opponent at 8 p.m.

Opening day match-ups at the championship will be determined following next weekend’s crossover playoff games.

In the women’s game, the Grizzlies battled hard but early shooting woes cost Georgian as they fell 50-32 to Centennial.

The Grizzlies were only able to muster up 11 first half points and while they played well in the second half, the deficit was too much to overcome.

Eden Young (Tottenham) had a season high 15 points in her final regular season game for Georgian. The fifth-year veteran is in her final season as she will be graduating at the end of the year.

Teammate Chelsey Lees (Elliot Lake) had seven points and 11 rebounds for Georgian.

The Grizzlies finish the season with a 3-14 record and are in seventh place in the OCAA east division standings. 

Georgian has qualified for the playoffs and will take on the OCAA west division’s second placed team the Humber Hawks next Friday, Feb. 22. The game will be hosted by Humber at a neutral site at the University of Toronto Mississauga.

The winner of the match-up will move onto play in the 2019 belairdirect OCAA Women’s Basketball Championship hosted by St. Lawrence College from Feb. 28 to Mar. 2 in Kingston, ON.
