Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) has been recognized for its efforts in energy and waste conservation with a Silver seal from the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) based on the health centre’s Green Hospital Scorecard results.

The Green Hospital Scorecard measures a variety of factors including energy and water use, waste generation and recycling rates.

This is a significant achievement as out of the 150 hospitals in Ontario, only two were awarded gold, 31 silver and 63 bronze.

“For the past two years we received a Bronze seal, but our increased efforts have paid off,” says Rob Purdy, operations director, Facilities and Food Services, RVH. “We already had many ‘green’ initiatives in place to conserve energy and reduce waste, but what made the difference in our 2015 results was even more energy savings and comprehensive recycling initiatives. Plans are already in the works to further enhance our recycling program in the future.”

RVH uses conservation measures including lights that automatically shut off in the evening, bathrooms with water-effective showerheads, and taps and toilets which results in a reduction in water use.

The health centre also installed green roofs in as part of its 2012 expansion to assist in storm water management and has introduced extensive recycling programs over the past two years.
