Great beach day for the May Two-Four, eh?

'It wasn’t super warm today, but wasn’t pouring rain or anything so that’s good. It was important to get outside after the winter we’ve had no matter what the weather was like'

No amount of overcast skies can stop Canadians from getting out to the beach on a long weekend after a cold winter.

As cottagers headed back down the Highway 400 through Barrie, some folks were making the best of a chilly day on Monday and heading outdoors for what many of us refer to as May Two-Four.

Andrew McNeill and his wife, Monica, were out with their dog Angel to take in some kayaking off Centennial Beach and were all alone in the water when they pushed off shore.

“We have the lake to ourselves it seems,” he said. “We went over to Minet’s Point first, but it was much wavier there than here, so we decided to head to this side and get some lake time in.

"We were out on a river near Angus earlier in the weekend, which was nice," McNeill added. "We’ve kayaked before, but this is our first year having our own, so now we can go whenever we get the feeling to.”

Centennial Beach was not as busy due to the chilly weather, but people still found ways to get out and enjoy the long weekend.

Lisa Hollett and her family went to Canada’s Wonderland on Sunday, but were in Barrie visiting family when she decided to take her boys, 11-year-old Matthias and nine-year-old Nicholas, to a cloudy Centennial Beach for the afternoon.

“My parents live in Barrie, so we’re visiting," Hollett said.

“We definitely wanted to get a little bit of wind to help with the whole kite thing," she added. "It wasn’t super warm today, but wasn’t pouring rain or anything so that’s good. It was important to get outside after the winter we’ve had no matter what the weather was like.”
