It's a snow day for many students in Barrie and some surrounding areas.

The Simcoe County District School Board says all school buses and vans in the North, West and Central Weather Zones have been cancelled due to current road and visibility conditions and the forecast for poor conditions to continue.

Schools remain open for student learning.

Schools in the Central Zone are in Barrie, innisfil and Angus.

The North Zone has schools in Elmvale, Midland, Penetanguishene and Orillia.

The West zone includes schools in Collingwood, Staynor and Wasaga Beach.

NO buses are cancelled in Alliston, Beeton, Bradford, Cookstown and Tottenham.

Wintery weather continues today with a snow squall warning issued from Environment Canada.

Flurries and local squalls and blowing snow, 20 to 30 cm, gusty winds and a high -7.

Mainly cloudy tonight but periods of snow return before Tuesday morning with a low -10.

Snow squall warning in effect for:

  • Barrie - Collingwood - Hillsdale
  • Midland - Coldwater - Orr Lake
  • Orillia - Lagoon City - Washago

Snow squalls are expected to persist today and then shift northward this evening.

The most intense snow bands could produce local snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm per 12 hours along with near zero visibilities in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common.

Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Road closures are possible.
