A blowing snow advisory and a snow squall watch are in effect for Barrie and surrounding areas.

The day will begin with rain changing to snow, heavy at times and blowing snow this afternoon.

The winds will kick up to 80 km/hr late this afternoon and the high of plus 5 will start to tumble to minus 1.

Environment Canada has issued two weather alerts for Barrie - Orillia - Midland:

Watches

4:44 AM EST Sunday 10 January 2016
Snow squall watch in effect for:

  • Barrie - Collingwood - Hillsdale
  • Midland - Coldwater - Orr Lake
  • Orillia - Lagoon City - Washago

Snow squalls are expected to develop this evening.

The most intense snow bands could produce local snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm per 12 hours along with near zero visibilities in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

Statements

4:44 AM EST Sunday 10 January 2016
Blowing Snow Advisory in effect for:

  • Barrie - Collingwood - Hillsdale
  • Midland - Coldwater - Orr Lake

Poor visibility in snow and blowing snow is expected this afternoon and early evening after periods of rain change to snow and strong northwesterly winds develop.

Conditions are expected to remain poor tonight as snow squalls develop off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.

Blowing snow advisories are issued when winds are expected to create blowing snow giving poor visibility to 800 metres or less for at least 3 hours.
