Special weather statement in effect.

Mainly cloudy today with 30 percent chance of flurries, wind gusting up to 50 km/h and the temperature steady near zero.

Here are the details of the special weather statement issued by Environment Canada:

4:32 AM Wednesday 07 December 2016

Special weather statement in effect for:

• Barrie - Collingwood - Hillsdale

• Midland - Coldwater - Orr Lake

• Orillia - Lagoon City - Washago

First significant lake effect snow event of the season Thursday night through Friday.

Snow squalls are expected to develop Thursday night in brisk northwest winds over Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

Latest indications suggest there is potential for a strong snow squall from Georgian Bay into Simcoe County, and another strong snow squall from Lake Huron into Huron, Middlesex and Lambton Counties.

Significant accumulating snow is possible from the strongest snow squalls.

Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Motorists planning travel in the regions should be prepared to change plans accordingly.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
