Get moving to raise awareness and cash for youth mental health

After several serious attempts to end her life, McAuley  is dedicating the her life to helping others who can relate to her personal story.

As head organizer of the Move-it for Young Minds, McAuley is putting the spotlight on youth mental health in Barrie on Saturday. 

The second annual charity event  kicks off at the St. Vincent Park pavillion  at 9 a.m. with participants of all ages walking along Barrie’s waterfront trails and participating in various fitness challenge stations along the way.

Organizers are hoping to see at least 200 participants and are the fundraising goal is $10,000 for the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre's children and youth mental health unit.

More than 30 local businesses are supporting the event, with prizes worth about $6,000 up for grabs.

Along with the walk, there will be henna tattoos, art, music, team fitness challenges, scenic walking trail, and more.

An estimated 1.2 million Canadian children and youth are affected by mental illness, but less than 20% will receive appropriate treatment, according to the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

Amber McAuley, head of the Move-it for Young Minds (MFYM) fundraiser, knows first-hand about living with a mental health disorder. She made several serious attempts to end her life and is dedicating the her life to helping others who can relate to her personal story.
