The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s volleyball teams played their final regular season games of the year when they travelled to take on the Loyalist Lancers on Saturday in Belleville, Ont.

Georgian’s men’s team wrapped the regular season in style with an impressive 3-0 win over the Lancers from set scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-22

Liam Gray had a team-high, nine-point performance while also adding 27 assists. The Barrie native had eight more aces in the game to finish the season with 80.

Gray had an incredible season as he finishes holding each OCAA men’s volleyball ace record including most in a single game (15), most in a single season with 80 and most all-time career aces with 195. He also finished the season third in the OCAA in assists with 576.

Darien Haynes had one block in the game to add to his all-time record. The Barrie native broke the OCAA record for career blocks earlier this season and finishes with 268.

The fifth year player also finishes with 1,066 career points which makes him Georgian’s all-time leading scorer and among the top players in OCAA history.

Erich Perau had six kills in the game to finish off his career with 966 kills which puts him second all-time in the OCAA and his 1,095 career points puts him fourth all-time in OCAA history. The Peterborough native spent the first four years of his career with the Fleming Knights before joining the Grizzlies this season.

The Grizzlies finish the regular season with a 16-2 record and have earned their third straight OCAA east division championship. Over the course of the last three seasons the Grizzlies have compiled a record of 51-3 in the regular season.

Georgian will now move onto the playoffs where they will host the St. Clair Saints next Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Georgian Athletic Centre. The Saints finished the regular season in eighth place in the OCAA west division with a 5-13 record. Tickets for the game are available at the doors for $5.

In the women’s game, the Grizzlies put up a solid effort but just couldn’t get over the hump in a tight game falling 3-1 with set scores of 25-22, 23-25, 27-25 and 25-14.

Kelsey Watson (Barrie) led the Grizzlies in scoring with 14 points while Domenica De Francesco (Barrie) wrapped up her solid rookie season with a 12 point performance.

Georgian finishes the regular season with a 6-12 record and are currently in a three-way tie with La Cite and Seneca. They could finish in a four-way tie depending on the results from Monday’s game between Loyalist and Fleming.

In either tiebreak scenario, the Grizzlies will finish the season in seventh place in the OCAA east division standings to claim the final playoff spot.

The Grizzlies will travel to take on the OCAA west division champions, the Fanshawe Falcons who finished the regular season at 18-0, next Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. in London.
