"After careful consideration," Georgian College officials announced today that they have cancelled this weekend's powwow at the Barrie campus due to concerns over COVID-19.

"With the safety and well-being of all who attend, from the students to the powwow participants to the visitors, we have to cancel the 15th annual Georgian College Pow Wow at this time," Georgian College Indigenous Resource Centres posted on their Facebook events page.

"There is no way that we can ensure the safety distance that is required to meet the safety protocols," the statement added. "We had done a very thorough risk assessment. Safety has got to be a number one concern during this time. And it’s with that thought the decision has been made to cancel this year’s powwow."

A college official said the decision was made in consultation with senior leadership and the Indigenous Studies department, using the federal government's risk assessment tool for planning events in light of the COVID-19 outbreak.

No decision has been made to reschedule the powwow.
