Funnel cloud spotted in north-end Barrie, captured over city hall

It is believed that the funnel cloud then moved toward the Midhurst area and Highway 26, 'well east of Bayfield Street'

A keen-eyed reader spotted a funnel cloud over the city today and managed to capture it on camera.

Reader Mark Molasy sent a picture to BarrieToday of a funnel cloud seemingly lingering over city hall Wednesday at approximately 1:30 p.m.

It was visible from Centennial Beach and came shortly before Environment Canada issued a weather statement for Barrie and the surrounding area to watch for potential developments of funnel clouds.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday that there were no reports of damage after the weather phenomenon was initially spotted somewhere around the Highway 400/11 split in the north end of the city.

It is believed that the funnel cloud then moved toward the Midhurst area and Highway 26, "well east of Bayfield Street," Leon said.

"It seems to have dissipated and I don't know where it ended up after that," he said, "but we've had no issues (as far as damages reported). It certainly looked ominous."

Leon says such a weather event gives credence to warnings on hot muggy days such as today.

"Like they always say, keep your eyes to the sky," he said.
