Fuel tanker collides with gas station sign after cutting corner too tight

Incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m., Monday, at the corner of Bayfield Street and Cundles Road

Some tense moments led to busy Bayfield Street being shut down Monday evening.

At 6:43 p.m., Barrie police were called to the scene after a fuel tanker cut the corner too tight entering the Esso Gas Station located at the northeast corner of Bayfield Street and Cundles Road.

The tanker struck a sign post on the property and became stuck.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday it took many organizations to remove the truck and tanker.

"A collaborative effort by the Barrie Fire and Emergency Services along with co-operation from the the fuel company, staff at the gas station and a professional effort by Currie's Towing allowed for the safe removal of the tanker from the sign it contacted," he said.

Traffic was only impacted in the area for a short period of time while crews safely and successfully moved the tanker.

All roads in the area that were affected were reopened just after 9 p.m.

Leon said a situation like the one last night takes caution and planning to make sure nothing goes wrong.

"When something like this occurs, all responding agencies work together to devise a plan that is based upon safety for first responders and the immediate area that is impacted by the incident," he said. "By assessing and reassessing as the incident unfolds, any issues that may arise can be addressed."

Last night, "the plan that was put in place worked and worked well," Leon added. "Given that the truck contained gasoline, anything could have taken place, but tonight everyone worked well to see it through to a safe conclusion."

No one was injured.
