From Miami to Barrie's north end, Super Bowl fever is high

Whether you're a fan of the 49ers, the Chiefs or just a fun night out, the Super Bowl has it all

The 54th Super Bowl may be taking place in Miami, but that isn’t stopping fans of the teams involved from partying north of the border.

St. Louis Bar and Grill on Duckworth Street was packed with fans of football, food and drink Sunday night as the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs battled for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

St. Louis Bar and Grill general manager Courtney Gooderham told BarrieToday that staff were preparing for a busy night, but even more so on the delivery end.

“We’re more preparing for take-out tonight. The Super Bowl is the biggest for us and we double our takeout on this day,” said Gooderham. “We definitely had to be sure we ordered enough chicken wings, as that will be the big seller tonight.”

Gooderham's location and the St. Louis on Veterans Drive were having a competition to see which establishment would have the most fun, with each restaurant choosing a team.

“We’re San Fran and they’re KC,” said Gooderham. “It is just an interactive thing to do and to see which location will have the most fun and biggest turnout.”

Matt Vettese and his table were going to do their part to make the night a boisterous one. Vettese is a die-hard 49ers fan and hoped his team can pull out the upset.

“I think the 49ers will pull off a pretty big upset,” said Vettese. “I know a lot of people are cheering for the Chiefs, but I honestly think San Fran is a better team and more well-rounded.”

Vettese said he could have watched the game at home, but knew the atmosphere of a bar at Super Bowl time couldn't be beat.

“It is always nice to get and meet new people during a sporting event,” said Vettese. “The Super Bowl is great, because even if you don’t have a team to cheer for, it's just the spectacle of it all that you can take in.”

Darryl Brightman is one of those people whose team didn’t make the final this year. Even though Brightman’s Pittsburgh Steelers wouldn't be adding to their six Super Bowl victories, he was out to just watch a good game.

“My second favourite team is San Fran, but mainly this is a fun night to be a football fan,” said Brightman. “Beer, food and friends make it a must-see game. I also feel like this game could be a high scoring one."

Shakira and Jennifer Lopez provided the entertainment for the equally anticipated half-time show.
