More than 1,000 troops will march in the Freedom of the City Parade in Barrie on Saturday morning.

Spectators are invited to line the parade route.

Military members CFB Borden will march from the Barrie Armoury on Parkside Drive up to city hall, to request Freedom of the City. The ceremonial event celebrates Borden's 100th anniversary.

Once at city hall, Commanding Officer Colonel  will request permission Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman to exercise Freedom of the City.

The tradition stems from 15th century England when cities were attacked by military units.

Before soldiers were allowed to enter through the city gates, the Chief Constable demanded to know the reason, then escorted the commander to the city council chambers. If the commander convinced the council his troops were to be trusted, Freedom of the City was granted.

Officials say the traditional practice is a symbolic way of recognizing the positive, ongoing relationship enjoyed between the city and CFB Borden.

Lehman says this year's parade is the biggest ever and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

"It's an historic event and a thrill," he said.

The parade starts the Barrie Armoury just before 10 a.m. The ceremony at City Hall starts at 11 a.m.
