Between 20 to 30 residents of a north-end Barrie apartment building were forced to evacuate in the middle of the night when one of the units caught fire.

One person was taken to hospital for observation.

Barrie firefighters were called out at about 3 a.m., Sunday, responding to a fire at a seventh-floor apartment at 101 Kozlov St.

“Just because of what was burning, the hallway was totally engulfed in black smoke,” said Deputy Fire Chief Ed Davis.

As a result, the entire seventh floor was evacuated. The residents were taken to another hallway in the building.

Barrie Transit also supplied a bus allowing residents to warm up.

At about 6 a.m., most were able to return.

“The apartment of origin, we found a hotel for the occupants,” said Davis.

Residents of the apartment next to the unit that caught fire have found an alternative place to stay.

Davis added that damage at the unit is considerable and it will be “uninhabitable for quite some time."

Cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
