Fire alarm sends Georgian College students into the cold

A burning smell coming from a heating unit led to the evacuation of the Georgian College student residence early Thursday morning

Barrie fire crews were called to the Georgian College Student Residence early Thursday morning for what was an overheated unit.

Firefighters attended at 101 Georgian Dr., around at 2:30 a.m., for what acting platoon chief of fire prevention Judith Myddelton told BarrieToday was the kind of ending they like to have in any call.

“The alarm was activated by security on site who noticed a burning smell,” Myddelton said. “Upon investigation, it appeared to be coming from a heating unit."

Contractors had been working on the heating system and power to the unit was isolated and there were no further issues, she added.

"The building did evacuate with no injuries and this was a good news story, just the way we prefer these calls to take place: building evacuated on arrival and an overheat condition contained before it became an actual fire emergency," Myddelton said.

Student Robert Lewis said he was awakened by the sound of the alarm and was one of the many inside the building who headed outside to the cold.

“I called front desk and they told me that it was a fire alarm and asked me to evacuate,” said Lewis. “Once I got out to the freezing cold, I did see smoke coming out of the building, but it was very minimal.

"When were allowed back in, I called front desk and they said there were no details at the time but the alarm was triggered because smoke was detected in the ventilation system," he added.

Barrie fire department officials remind everyone to evacuate when they hear the alarm to do so.
