Familiar face at city hall named general manager of infrastructure, growth

Bala Araniyasundaran, the City of Barrie's new general manager, brings with him 33 years of progressive experience in the public sector and consulting industry.

Following an extensive recruiting process, the City of Barrie has hired Bala Araniyasundaran as the General Manager of Infrastructure and Growth Management. Araniyasundaran will begin the role on Nov. 22, 2021.

“I’m very pleased to have Bala join our executive management team,” said Michael Prowse, CAO. “This is an exciting time for the City of Barrie. As we prepare to embark on significant growth and development, Bala’s experience and leadership will play a key role.”

Araniyasundaran brings with him 33 years of progressive experience in the public sector and consulting industry. He has experience delivering complex projects and has expertise in water and wastewater operations, business development and leading multi-disciplinary teams. Over the past three years Araniyasundaran has held the role of director of infrastructure.

Prior to coming to Barrie, he held a leadership position with Colliers Project Leaders, GHD inc., and was the director of capital projects planning and delivery for the Regional Municipality of York. Araniyasundaran is a professional engineer with an engineering degree from University of Guelph. He is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and has a masters certificate in municipal management.

In Araniyasundaran’s new role he will lead a multi-faceted division that includes building, corporate asset management, development services, economic and creative development, business performance and environmental sustainability, infrastructure and operations.
