Fall has arrived at Barrie Hill Farms

'They are all about tractors and big tires in the mud, jumping in puddles,' says mom of her two sons, who braved the rain to go apple picking and pick up some pumpkins at Barrie Hill Farms on Sunday

Fall is in full force at Barrie Hill Farms.

The berry picking of summer has quickly made way for apples and pumpkins at the popular spot, just outside of Barrie in Springwater Township, and based on the turnout over the weekend, area residents are more than happy for the change.

Sheleen Munroe and Bradley O’Rourk made the drive to Barrie Hill Farms (BHF) Sunday morning - despite the weather man’s forecast of all day rain - with young sons Devon and Daniel, telling BarrieToday they planned to do some apple picking while there.

“It’s kind of a yearly thing we do. I saw online they had apples and (also) wanted to check out some pumpkins,” said Munroe. “My family, usually we’d travel all over Collingwood and come through here and get apples and make apple pie.”

The couple refused to let the pouring rain that started during their drive deter them from what they’d set out to do.

“Heck no! We have rain gear,,” she declared, while watching the boys jump in puddles before setting off on their day’s adventure, including a wagon ride. “They are all about tractors and big tires in the mud, jumping in puddles.”

This was O’Rourk's first visit to BHF, telling BarrieToday he also likes seeing the big tractors.

“Plus I want to test out my new umbrella!”

Oro Medonte resident Dan Bailey also dug out the raincoats and umbrellas Sunday as he, his eight-year-old daughter Kaydence and three-year-old son Keegan, spent some time checking out the farm for the first time.

“It’s pumpkin season and my uncle and auntie were going to go here. I really wanted to come here and it surprised me that it was so big and fun.” said Kaydence.

The plan, added Bailey, was to take the kids on a tractor ride, but given the downpour, they decided to postpone that to another visit, and instead, take advantage of the time to pick out some pumpkins, gourds and hay in order to make the best fall-themed porch display they can.

“I think we will come back next weekend and do the tractor rides then,” he added.

Although Kaydence admitted fall may not be her absolute favourite season of the year, she told BarrieToday she does enjoy a lot of the things that come along with it - including pumpkin pie and jumping in the leaves

Dad however, said fall is definitely his favourite.

“The apples, the pumpkins, Halloween for sure…Thanksgiving! It just has all the best holidays.”
