Experts branch out to Oakley Park school on National Tree Day

Seven new trees delivered to Davidson Street school Wednesday morning by Barrie's Northshore Tree Experts

National Tree Day was celebrated at a north-end Barrie school this morning as seven free trees were delivered for the kids to plant.

Oakley Park Public School received the gift of nature from Northshore Tree Experts, Wednesday, as the trees were delivered and planted by students and staff of the arboricultural company.

Northshore Tree Experts owner Johnny Corner told BarrieToday what brought on the act of giving at the Davidson Street school.

“We give free trees to our customers whenever we remove a tree that's more than 30 centimetres (diameter at breast height),” Corner said. “We have customers that didn't want their free tree, so as a result of that, we are donating them here today.”

The planting excursion had some classes come out and not only place the trees in the pre-dug holes, but also learn a little about them from the Barrie company.

“We’ll talk to them about the importance of National Tree Day, but also the importance of having trees and a little bit about what we do,” said Corner.

Today marked the 23rd annual National Tree Day, which takes place each year in late-September. It's a chance to talk about the important benefits trees provide, such as clean air, soil stabilization, shelter, and food for wildlife.
