Eight new COVID cases confirmed in Simcoe-Muskoka today, none in Barrie

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported eight new COVID-19 cases and two deaths today (June 30).

The two deaths include a woman between 65 and 79 years old who died on June 18 and a man between 45 and 64 years old who died on June 28. Both were residents of Simcoe County – one from Innisfil and one from Adjala-Tosorontio. 

There are 70 active cases in the region. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,275 cases of COVID-19 with 11,532 of those cases recovered and 251 cases ending in death.

There are 11 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19 related illness, which includes one new hospitalization since yesterday. 

The health unit has reported a total of 4,906 variant strain cases, with 33 of those still active. 

It can take several days to confirm a variant strain after a positive COVID-19 test result is reported to the health unit.

Today's update also includes the following information on variants of concern: 

  • 3,988 local cases have tested positive for the COVID-19 variant of concern B.1.1.7 (alpha), no increase
  • 164 cases have tested positive for the P.1 (gamma) variant of concern, no increase
  • 32 cases have tested positive for the B.1.351 (beta) variant of concern, no increase
  • 52 cases have tested positive for the B.1.617.2 (delta) variant of concern, no increase
  • 670 cases have screened positive (awaiting confirmatory testing).

To date, 392,752 Simcoe-Muskoka residents (65 per cent of the population) region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, and 167,805 people (27.8 per cent of the population) have received two doses.

According to the health unit, 34 per cent of the region's adult population (aged 18 and over) have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, and another 41 per cent have received one dose. The remaining 25 per cent is unvaccinated. 

There are three active outbreaks in the region. The newest outbreak is at a construction site, and was declared June 25. There is one case reported for the outbreak.  

There are two outbreaks at group homes in Simcoe County. One outbreak involves six cases (declared June 8) and the other involves 17 cases (declared June 11). Both are unchanged since Friday's report. 

Anyone aged 12 years or older living in Simcoe-Muskoka region can book their first or second dose of vaccine online via Ontario vaccine booking system. More appointments are added regularly for clinics throughout the region.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified). 

  • Clearview (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is linked to close contact. 
  • Innisfil (4): One youth under 18 years old and three people between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Bradford (2): One youth under 18 years old and one person between 35 and 44 years old. One case is linked to close contact transmission.
  • There is one new case in Muskoka, a person between 18 to 34 years old from Bracebridge. 

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on June 30).
