NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF BARRIE
*************************
During Environment Canada-declared severe heat and humidity warnings in Barrie, the city’s waste contractor will start collecting curbside garbage, recycling, green bin and yard waste materials at 5:30 a.m.

If there is an early collection time on these specific days, the city is asking residents to put their waste out for curbside collection the night before, any time after 7 p.m. or very early in the morning (before 5:30 a.m.) on collection day. The early collection time will only be in effect on days when Environment Canada has declared a heat warning.

The City of Barrie will post notification of early curbside collection start time on barrie.ca/CurbsideCollection, Facebook and Twitter by 5 p.m. on the day prior to each impacted collection day.

In anticipation of extreme heat, residents can keep up-to-date on Environment Canada-declared heat warnings in Barrie by visiting weather.gc.ca. A heat warning is issued when two or more consecutive days of daytime maximum temperatures are expected to reach 31°C or warmer and nighttime minimum temperatures are expected to fall to 20°C or warmer; or when two or more consecutive days of humidex values are expected to reach 40°C or higher. If Environment Canada is forecasting these conditions, residents should place their items curbside the night before.

The city has put these measures in place to ensure the safety of waste collection staff during extreme heat. The health and safety of Barrie staff, as well as our contracted staff, is always a priority.

These measures will be in place for the duration of summer 2020.
