Downtown gazebo gets a new life

The gazebo at Sam Cancilla Park in Dunlop Street in downtown Barrie, once on the brink of destruction, has reopened.

The gazebo at Sam Cancilla Park in Dunlop Street in downtown Barrie, once on the brink of destruction, has reopened.

A public outcry and a $25,000 donation from the Barrie Kiwanis Club convinced council to save the 81-year-old structure which was closed last December “due to significant structural deterioration that creates a public safety risk.” The structure has been fenced off to keep the public away.

Council voted to demolish the structure which was built in 1935 at a cost of $1,556. The decision was reversed one week later and the structure has been restored.

"This is much appreciated. Thank you to the Kiwanis for coming forward and I know the residents of the city will be grateful," said councillor Rose Romita.

Work included the replacement of all wood posts, two structural beams, bracing, removing benches and building a ramp for wheelchair accessibility. Picnic tables will also be added, to encourage residents to stop and enjoy the shelter.

The total estimated cost is $50,000, with the city paying half.
