The three women who rescued a blind, toothless cat on Tuesday now have some more information on the cat’s state of health.
When they rescued him on Tuesday night, the cat was found in the parking lot of the McDonald’s in Bradford with his head in a paper bag eating old french fries.
After a three-hour ordeal, the women were finally able to secure him in a trap for animal control to come pick him up.
According to Melyssah DeVrye, one of the women who rescued 'Donnie' last Tuesday night, the cat has been confirmed feral by the veterinarian and animal control and has been put on antibiotics.
He is underweight from not being able to eat properly without teeth and he is blind in one eye. He is currently on antibiotics for a respiratory infection.
He is not neutered, but DeVrye along with the two other women who rescued him, Veronica Holmes and Victoria Grimshaw, have offered to split the cost three ways to have him neutered.
“We are trying to come up with a plan as to where he can stay permanently,” said DeVrye.
Since the cat is feral, they would like him to go somewhere that has a large property where he can roam. They are currently looking into a friend’s home with a large property in Port Perry and at a feral cat farm in Alliston.
“He may be workable, as to getting him adopted,” DeVrye explained. “But he’s been out so long that he may prefer being outside rather than in.”
The ladies plan to house him for a few weeks where they can monitor his behaviour and make a better assessment if he can be rehabilitated. The women have worked in animal rescue before and in particular with feral cats.
“We want to get a rough idea to see if it would be possible to rehabilitate him or if it would just be better to send him to live his life outside in a monitored environment,” she said.
The women will be picking him up from animal control on Monday. In the meantime, they are looking for any litter, food or litter pans that anyone can donate.
DeVrye is asking any donations to be dropped off at 79 Thornton Ave. and be left in front of the garage door.
