Dallaire unable to attend Midland-area gala on Saturday

Foundation enlists award-winning humanitarian Dr. Samantha Nutt to co-host Power of Giving fundraising event at Discovery Harbour

Due to a family emergency, retired general Roméo Dallaire is unable to attend the Georgian Bay General Hospital Foundation’s Power of Giving Gala on Saturday.

In his place, the foundation has enlisted Dr. Samantha Nutt as co-host with Power of Giving committee chair Sara Lankshearfor for the event being held this year at Discovery Harbour.

According to a release, Nutt is an award-winning humanitarian, bestselling author and acclaimed public speaker.

“A medical doctor and the founder of the international humanitarian organizations War Child Canada and War Child USA, Dr. Nutt has worked with children and their families at the frontline of many of the world’s major crises,” the release states, pointing out she’s a staff physician at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto and is an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Toronto.

The foundation, which hopes to raise $250,000 for its impact fund, also provides hints on attending the gala, including what to wear since this year’s event "aims to give guests a relaxing and inviting" experience.

“The dress code can be described as attending a garden party or semi-casual wedding,” the foundation writes. “While the basics stay the same, this is a great time to loosen up and get more adventurous with colours! Make sure to plan your shoe choice accordingly, opting for some flats or wedges - you don't want to get your heel stuck in the boardwalk!

“As a reminder, the event is being held outdoors, so you may want a sweater or jacket as the sun goes down.”

Tickets to attend the Power of Giving Gala in person are $150 each, while virtual event attendance is free with pre-registration. The in-person event begins at 5 p.m., followed by the live-stream at 7 p.m. There will also be live entertainment by Toronto-based singer/songwriter Nelson Sobral and a silent auction.

Anyone with additional questions can contact Victoria Evans ([email protected].ca) or call the foundation office at (705) 526-GIVE (4483).
