Crews respond to smoke coming from Innisfil St. storage area

'We have to go into each locker, move stuff and make sure it’s out,' says Barrie fire official

Barrie fire crews spent part on Monday morning putting out a fire in a commercial building on Innisfil Street, between Tiffin Street and Essa Road.

Barrie Fire and Emergency Services got the call about smoke coming from a storage area located in the basement of the concrete building, deputy fire chief Carrie Clark told BarrieToday.

“Crews are making their way through the storage unit to ensure that anything that is extended from the point of origin is overhauled and extinguished,” she said. “We have to go into each locker, move stuff and make sure it’s out.”

There were no injuries caused by the fire, Clark said, adding five trucks were initially dispatched and four were still remaining on site as of 10:40 a.m.

“It’s just a lot of physical labour to move stuff out of a locker, so it looks like there are a lot of crews on scene, but they’re just cycling through so they don’t get overheated and taxed (by) the work of pulling ceilings or whatever else they have to do," she said.

No cause or damage estimate has yet to be determined.

“They’re still in fire suppression mode. Once they’ve got that part under control, we will revert back to investigation mode," Clark said.
