The County of Simcoe wants to up its waste diversion to 71 per cent by 2020 and that means residents should expect major changes to the waste management system.

Several options have been presented to County Council -- including a full pay as you throw program, where taxes would be reduced in favour of a per-bag fee.

Moving to bi-weekly garbage collection - as the City of Barrie has done - and a standard size container for each household are also suggestions on the table.

County Council rejected the idea of clear garbage bags.

The County currently has a 59 per cent diversion rate, one of the highest in Ontario.

There will be public information sessions  in the new year and recommendations to County County a few months later.
