County divvies up funds for homelessness, poverty supports

How Simcoe County helps agencies who help the poor - in dollars.

Simcoe County will spend almost $1.5 million this year and almost $1.7 million in 2017 to help community agencies help keep families warm and fed.

In an update, the county’s social policy and planning manager Doriano Calvano outlined the on-the-ground services – and people – who help those who are homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless.

“These programs and services are essential components of Simcoe County’s homelessness service sector and deliver a range of supports to individuals and families,” he said.

New in 2017, the county will assist the Salvation Army – Orillia with a new street outreach once a week, at a cost of $15,000.

The 2016 funding breaks down as follows:

  • Salvation Army, Barrie: caseworker, $40,600
  • Salvation Army, Barrie: community meals program, $84,864
  • Elizabeth Fry Society: trustee, to help 16 and 17-year-olds, $27,687
  • Georgian Triangle Residential Resource Centre – South Georgian Bay: $114,588
  • Georgian Triangle Residential Resource Centre – Orillia: $84,313
  • Salvation Army, Midland: street outreach, $26,520

Housing support workers and food and health services:

  • Simcoe Community Services, Barrie: $188,317
  • Orillia Lighthouse Centre: $30,042
  • Home Horizon Georgian Triangle: $32,156
  • Redwood Park Communities: $27,300
