No cost? No strings attached? Really?

On Saturday, June 11, amid waves of dark clouds and the threat of rain, Connexus Church held a community block party for the Prince William Way neighbourhood in Barrie that was hit by the tornado last year.

This free event held at Hyde Park was intended as an opportunity for neighbours to connect with each other, either for the first time if they had recently moved into the area or perhaps reconnect after a few years of pandemic. The hope was that new memories of fun and laughter would be made.

Connexus provided food (hot dogs, hamburgers, and ice cream) and drinks, incredible inflatables for families, glitter tattoos and balloon animals, all while the park radiated with fun music provided by a DJ. Incredibly, despite the dark clouds and threat of rain, approximately 500 people from the neighborhood showed up.

The Connexus team met so many families new to the City of Barrie. One family moved to the area a month ago as refugees from Ukraine, and they were able to meet some of their neighbours for the first time.

People couldn’t believe that a church would throw an event for free, no strings attached, as a way to connect people and have some fun. Good times were had by all and the weather turned out to be much better than expected — a great win for this resilient community.

Connexus Church meets on Sunday mornings at 9 and 10:30 a.m. at 20 Mills Rd. in Barrie or on YouTube.
