Students at the Bayview Transition Centre in south-end Barrie will be kicking up dust as they do their part to clean up a neighbouring greenspace next week.

The centre, which operates under the Simcoe County District School Board and under the umbrella of nearby Innisdale Secondary School, has a classroom on Bayview Drive.

"Our students visited Ripley's Aquarium recently and are very concerned about keeping our lakes and oceans clean and free of plastics and garbage," said teacher Roxy Reimer. "This is why they are leading a Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup right here at Lackies Creek."

The event is set for Thursday, April 25 from 9-11 a.m., at Lackies Bush in south-end Barrie. People can meet in the southeast parking lot at the Allandale Recreation Centre, located at the corner of Bayview and Little.

Reimer hopes the students' initiative will spur others into action.

"The class really wants as many members of the community to sign up to help clean up Lackies Creek and positively impact our Lake Simcoe and Canadian shorelines," she said.

When people sign up on the website, Reimer noted all gloves and garbage bags are provided free.
