Come on down and skate!

It's opening day of Barrie's outdoor waterfront rink

Don't let the weather deter your desire to get outdoors and skate at the waterfront.

It may be a bit wet at times today but the ice rink at Kempenfelt Bay is open for business.

"Today is day one. We've been building the ice over the past week so we're at a suitable depth," said Kevin Datema, Supervisor of Recreation Facilities for the city of Barrie.

The rink is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and alternates every two hours between pleasure skating and hockey.

"I've played hockey since I was a little boy and I also use this ice rink so you might see me down here this weekend," said Datema.

City worker David Cassar will be monitoring the rink every hour to ensure the ice is in good shape and everyone is following the proper rules.

"Today's my first shift at this place and I'm looking forward to working here," Cassar said.  "You've got the nice lake view. It would be pretty cool for any hockey enthusiast to come down and play some hockey and looking at the big bay there."

It's the second year for the temporary facility and Datema says it could potentially be moved to a permanent location in the future.
