City councillors are making moves to unclog traffic congestion at Mapleview Drive East and Bayview.

Councillors voted Monday evening to have city staff in the Roads, Parks and Fleet Department work with Barrie Police to investigate ways of mitigating the gridlock and discourage vehicles from blocking the intersection.

A pilot project is being proposed similar to the “Don’t Block the Box” initiative implemented in Toronto at the intersection of Yonge and Bloor Streets. That involves the painting of physical lines in the inside of the intersection with increased enforcement by Barrie Police.

City staff will work with local industrial and business community in the Bayview Drive/Lockhart Road/Huronia Road Business Park Area to review alternatives and suggestions for vehicular access to the area, which would include using Welham Road to avoid gridlock.

Traffic signal timing alternatives will also be reviewed with an aim to clear the intersection and corridor in a more timely and effective manner.
