Disruptions to the Rogers cellphone network, which also affects Fido customers, is resulting in dropped 911 calls, Barrie police have confirmed.

“911 calls are coming in and are dropping if they are part of the Rogers network,” said Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon. “We’re trying to follow up using our resources where we can."

Rogers has confirmed “intermittent service interruption for wireless voice and data services” through social media, but it hasn’t indicated the extent of the problem or when it will be resolved.

According to Downdetector, which monitors outages, customers in southern Ontario are largely impacted, but it is being described as a Canada-wide problem. It charts a peak just after 7 a.m., another at 10 a.m., and then again at 1 p.m. today.

Meanwhile, Rogers customers have complained online about a loss of work resulting in a loss of income because of the outage. As the problem persists, there have been complaints about the lack of updates on the situation.

Rogers has not responded to a request for comment or indicated when the service will be restored.
