Christmas Cheer needs a last minute boost

It's down to the wire for the Barrie and District Christmas Cheer campaign and the numbers aren't adding up to the goal of $250,000. With just one day to go before the donation deadline on Saturday, the cash and gift card total sits at $167,000.

It's down to the wire for the Barrie and District Christmas Cheer campaign and the numbers aren't adding up to the goal of $250,000.

With just one day to go before the donation deadline on Saturday, the cash and gift card total sits at $167,000 - up from $130,000 this morning.

"It has been a fantastic day going from $130,000 to $167,000 over the course of eight hours," said spokesperson Deb James.

"That's a lot of money for one day.

"People are hearing us and getting the message that we need help. I know it doesn't look like Christmas or feel like Christmas and people aren't into the Christmas spirit but they are starting to feel the urgency."

Toys and non-perishable food donations will be used to fill hampers for needy families in the Barrie and Innisfil area.

There is still a need for toys for boys ages 1 - 2 and 7 - 10.

"We still have over 60 bags to pack in the 7 to 10 age group, with virtually no toys to put in them," James said.

Cash is also needed to "fill the gaps", providing enough families with "a full turkey dinner with all the fixings ... just like you or I might have," James said.

"We may need to buy a few extra things for particular families, maybe they have lots of kids and we want to make sure it isn't just a couple of toys and a turkey they are getting."

There is still time to donate online at christmascheerbarrie.com, and James says she is confident the $250,000 goal will be reached.

If not by end of day tomorrow, she says nobody will go without.

"What we want is to say that it's all done before Christmas," she said. "But, if not, then we will keep collecting money past Christmas and into January if we have to."

Money can be donated online anytime at christmascheerbarrie.com, or drop by Barrie and District Christmas Cheer headquarters located in the Flags Unlimited Building on St. Vincent Street.

The final day for accepting toys and food is Saturday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
