Police have upgraded charges against five people to include manslaughter in connection with an assault that happened on a Bradford street in September.

South Simcoe Police were called to Centre Street just after 2 a.m. on Sept. 12. When they arrived, officers found a 56-year-old man lying unconscious on a driveway. He was suffering from a serious head injury.

The victim, James McCallen of Bradford, was transported to the trauma centre at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. The father of four remained in critical condition until he died on Sept. 24.

A total of six people were arrested and charged by South Simcoe Police and one man had all charges dropped after investigators reviewed the case with the Crown Attorney.

Three of the accused have been released on bail. One man is currently awaiting a bail hearing on these charges, and one of the accused men remains in custody, after he was denied bail.

The future court dates are still being determined. The names of the accused will not be released.
