CFB Borden soldier killed in crash is identified

The soldier killed in a two-vehicle crash in Angus on Friday has been identified at 45-year-old Master Corporal Dave Anderson.

The sodier killed in a two-vehicle crash in Angus on Friday has been identified at 45-year-old Master Corporal Dave Anderson.

According to OPP, the collision happened at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of 5th Line of Essa and Centre Street Angus.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and coworkers of MCpl Dave Anderson during this very difficult time," said Lieutenant-Colonel Jillian Biship, Commanding Officer, 400 Tactical Helicopter Squadron.

"The loss of one of our own is never easy and, as we enter the holiday season, it is especially difficult."

She described the  400 Tactical Helicopter Squadron as "a very tight knit community."

"We are committed to ensuring our airmen and airwomen are provided with support in this time of grief." 

Anderson was found unresponsive when paramedics arrived at the scene of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Provincial police say the driver of a pickup truck ignored a stop sign and collided with Anderson’s SUV. The impact from the crash sent the SUV into a nearby ditch.

Anderson was an aionics systems technician with the 400 Tactical Helicopter Squadron and had served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 18 years.

It was the second tragedy in as many days involving family members at CFB Borden.

On Thursday afternoon, a young child died after being struck by a vehicle that was backing up in a residential area of the base at around 5 p.m.

According to officials, the driver and the victim’s family are members of the military.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service (CFNIS), handles serious incidents with the military, is now investigating the child's death.

“We really want to express our sympathy to all of these affected by the tragic accident,” said Doyon.
