Car catches fire inside garage of west-end home

'The homeowners will be out for some time,' fire chief tells BarrieToday at the scene

No one was injured after a car caught fire inside the garage of a west-end Barrie home Monday afternoon.

Barrie firefighters were called out shortly before 3 p.m. to a home on McAvoy Drive, in the area of Dunlop Street West and Miller Drive, for a vehicle fire that was threatening to also damage the interior of the single-detached house.

"When crews arrived, the vehicle fire had extended into the main part of the garage, but not into the house," Fire Chief Cory Mainprize told BarrieToday at the scene.

"The fire wall between the house and garage contained the fire to the garage area, but there is extensive damage to the vehicles inside the garage," he added.

Fire officials later reported that the blaze may have extended from the garage toward the attic.

Crews knocked down the initial fire before beginning an overhaul.

Around 5 p.m., the fire had been extinguished.

There were no injuries reported.

Mainprize said there will be smoke damage inside the home, because smoke did extend into the main part of the single-family dwelling.

"The homeowners will be out for some time," he added.

Crews remain on scene to determine origin and cause of the blaze.
