Patrick Brown will not seek re-election this summer.

“After much thought, I will not be running in the upcoming provincial election,” he wrote Thursday night on Twitter. “I remain committed to the Conservative movement and to the well-being of my local community.”

Ontario Progressive Conservative Party president Jag Badwal said Thursday night the provincial nominations committee decided unanimously that Brown would not be an eligible candidate for nomination in the Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte riding.

Brown stepped down as party leader in late January amid allegations of sexual misconduct. He has denied the allegations.

The next steps will see the local PCs find another candidate for the riding.

“I am confident that Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte will have a PC Party candidate that will hit the ground running and work hard on behalf of our constituents,” Brown wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to the people of Barrie and Simcoe County for your unwavering support over the last 17 years.”

The provincial election is June 7.
