Boy, 14, charged with first-degree murder in Penvill Trail death

No names have been released; post-mortem scheduled for February 21 to determine cause of death

As a result of an ongoing investigation into a death that occurred yesterday at a Penvill Trail residence in the City of Barrie, the Barrie Police Service Homicide Unit has charged a 14-year-old male with:

  • First degree murder, Contrary to Section 235(1), Criminal Code of Canada
  • Aggravated assault with a weapon, Contrary to Section 267(a), Criminal Code of Canada
  • Fail to comply with sentence, Contrary to Section 137, Youth Criminal Justice Act (2 Counts).

The identity of the accused, who was remanded into custody late yesterday afternoon, cannot be released in accordance with provisions contained within the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). He is scheduled to return to the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on Friday for a bail hearing.

Police can now confirm that a post mortem is scheduled to take place on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019 at the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS) located in Toronto in order to determine the cause of death.
