Barrie dog owners risk fines if their pets are not registered by next week, according to the city of Barrie's new one-time pet registration.
The city is reminding pet owners that this is the final week before enforcement starts under the new system that replaces the pet license, which required owners to renew their pet's license and pay a fee each year.
The previous annual pet license was required for dogs and cats with a different fee for each, and various other fees if pets were neutered.
Senior pet owners were exempted under the previous system.
But now the fees are the same for all pet owners but registration is optional for cats.
The fee for each dog or cat is $50 each.
In Barrie, residents are required to register their dogs.
By-law Services staff regularly visit city dog parks to check for pet tags and anyone caught with an unregistered dog can face fines ranging from $150 to $5,000.
As an added incentive, the city will enter all registrations received by Jan. 31, 2016 into a draw for a chance to win a $100 gift card.
