Baycats claw their way back with big eighth inning in Kitchener

KITCHENER – The Barrie Baycats scored eight runs in the eighth inning to beat the Kitchener Panthers, 11-9, Sunday afternoon at Jack Couch Park. 

Jordan Castaldo went 3-for-5 and finished a triple short of the cycle. He drove in four and scored three times. Starlin Rodriguez had two hits, two RBI and a run. Kyle DeGrace singled twice and scored twice. 

Kevin Atkinson picked up a pair of RBI, Jeff Cowan had two hits, an RBI and a run, Branfy Infante added an RBI, and Brad Bissell singled three times and scored once. 

Adrian Salcedo (1-0) picked up the win, scattering two hits in two scoreless innings of relief. He had two strikeouts. Santos Arias started and went six innings, allowing four runs on six hits with four strikeouts. 

For Kitchener, Nick Parsons drove in three and scored once. Zach Johnson had two RBI, Zarley Cina had three hits, two runs and an RBI, Keegan Marsden scored twice, and Mike Andrulis and Jeff Hunt each had an RBI and scored. 

Austin Hassani (0-1) took the loss, allowing three unearned runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. 

Jasvir Rakkar went six innings and gave up three runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts. 

Each team is 2-1. 

Leafs use longball to beat Jackfish

TORONTO – Four players went deep in a 22-hit attack as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Welland Jackfish 14-5 Sunday afternoon at Christie Pits. 

Justin Marra and Marcus Knecht each went 4-for-6 with a home run and three RBI. They combined to score seven times. Grant Tamane singled, homered and drove in two while scoring twice, while Cooper Lamb added a solo shot. 

Ryan Dos Santos had four hits and two runs, Mike Reeves singled twice and drove in two, Zac Orchard had two hits and an RBI, and Damon Topolie drove in a run.

Mateo Kekatos (2-0) picked up the win, allowing two runs on two hits over two innings of relief. He walked two and struck out two. Starter RJ Page lasted three innings and yielded three runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout. 

Justin Cicatello earned the save, going three scoreless innings with a walk and three strikeouts.

Toronto improved to 3-1. 

For Welland, Wilson Soriano went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI. DeAndre Asbury-Heath and Greg Marco each drove in a run, and Nate Mastervick had two hits and a run. 

Chris Boatto (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on nine hits over three innings. He struck out three without issuing a walk. 

Welland dropped to 1-1.  

Reilly powers Royals past Red Sox 

BRANTFORD – Sean Reilly went 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBI and three runs to lead the Guelph Royals to a 7-2 win Sunday afternoon in Brantford. 

Angel Villalona had three hits and a run, Justin Interisano singled twice, and Ethan Mohan scored twice. 

Joel Espinal took the win, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.

Nick Zarzycki had the lone RBI in the loss. Chris Iitshishin added two hits. Nic Burdett and Anthony Rizquez scored the runs. 

Victor Mueses (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits over five innings. He walked five and struck out six. 

Both teams are 1-2.
