Barrie residents will decide what councillors are worth

Review committee will have five citizen members from the community

What the next members of city council are paid will soon be in the hands of Barrie citizens.

Council gave final approval Monday night to a motion establishing a council compensation review committee, to review the compensation and benefits of members of council for the 2022-26 term of office.

The committee will have five citizen members from the community. 

Members of council currently receive a salary of $40,484, a car allowance of $2,100 and related expenses.

The deputy-mayor’s salary is $45,677 and has a car allowance of $3,300, plus expenses.

And the mayor’s salary is $124,690 with a $6,000 car allowance, and expenses. The mayor is also paid $48,750 to sit on the board of Alectra, the power company partially owned by the city.

This council compensation review is done ahead of each municipal election.
