Barrie residents account for almost half of today's 42 new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka

Health unit reports seven of today's 19 cases are close-contact transmission and two are listed as community-acquired

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 42 new COVID-19 cases in today's update (May 18). 

There are 767 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 4,206 variant cases confirmed to date, with 573 of those cases still active.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 11,446 cases of COVID-19 with 9,891 of those cases recovered and 241 cases ending in death. 

There are 26 people from Simcoe County and two from Muskoka District hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes three new hospitalizations since yesterday.

To date, 253,025 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 41.9 per cent of the region's population. About 3.9 per cent of the population has received two doses of vaccine.

In Simcoe County, 221,569 residents (41.2 per cent of the population) have received one dose of vaccine, and 19,683 (3.7 per cent) have received two doses.

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified).

  • Barrie (19): Four youth under 18 years old, nine people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, and four people between 45 and 64 years old. Seven cases are linked to close contact transmission, two are listed as community-acquired. 
  • Innisfil (3): One person between 35 and 44 years old and two people between 45 to 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact and one is listed as community-acquired.
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (4): Two youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. All four cases are linked to close contact transmission. 
  • Orillia (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old.
  • Ramara (3): Two people between 45 and 64 years old and one person over 79 years old. All three cases are linked to close contact. 
  • Tiny (4): Two people between 18 and 34 years old and two people between 45 and 64 years old. All four are linked to close contact. 
  • New Tecumseth (2): One youth under 18 years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact. 
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (3): Two youth under 18 years old and one person between 35 and 44 years old. Three cases are linked to close contact.
  • There are three new cases in Muskoka, two in Gravenhurst, and one in Georgian Bay Township. 

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on May 18).
