Barrie Out of The Cold is providing essential information, orientation and training for volunteer teams preparing for the 2016-17 season which starts Nov. 14.

An information session, which will focus on safety and security issues, is being held on Nov. 5 at the First Christian Reformed Church at 33 Shirley Avenue from 9 a.m. until noon.

The program will include a video presentation on homelessness in Barrie, a guest speaker/panel discussion with Barrie Police Services, the Busby Centre and BOOTC and a Q & A session with Barrie Out of the Cold Operations and Training Leaders.

The session will also include Scenario and Strategies training for all volunteer positions.

This event marks the start of the 19th year of providing safe, respectful, welcoming overnight accommodation and meals from November to April.

Community support is needed to ensure that Barrie Out of the Cold will continue to be there as an alternative to sleeping out in the cold.

Barrie Out of the Cold (BOOTC) still urgently requires men for all shifts.

New applicants are encouraged to attend this event and register as a volunteer.

During its season of operation, which runs from mid-November to the end of April, Barrie Out of the Cold operates out of five host churches, providing meals and overnight accommodations for our guests.

In 2015-16, BOOTC provided meals and shelter 5,494 times.

Barrie Out of the Cold requires more than 1,000 volunteers annually to provide this important community service
